Speaker Series with Ed Okonowicz Storytelling from Brandywine to the Bay
The earliest form of entertainment and education is storytelling. Using age-old and updated presentation techniques, this program features a wide range of different types of stories (historical, folktales, yarns, jokes) set in the mid-Atlantic region. Each presentation includes lots of humor and plenty of opportunities for audience interaction and discussion. In addition to enjoying an entertaining experience, attendees learn about the art of storytelling, how it developed and why it is still important in today’s high-tech society.

Delaware Roots Film Series Hands of Harvest
Held at the Historic Milton Theatre in partnership with the Rehoboth Beach Film Society.
Hands of Harvest is a documentary film that chronicles the journey of migrant Mexican women who travel to fishing villages on Maryland’s Eastern Shore to pick crabs in seafood plants scattered along its rural shores, offering a glimpse into a renowned American Industry being kept afloat by foreign labor. Eight-year-old Ruth is struggling to find her place after moving to lower Delaware in 1934. When she finds her father’s ceremonial Native American regalia, she finally starts to feel the happiness she left behind in Philadelphia. Her joy comes to a crashing end when she is accosted by three boys outside the local general store. Ashamed of her Native American heritage, Ruth must learn to understand the importance and beauty of her culture in a world that does not accept it.

Vietnam Mailbag Lecture & Exhibit Opening
Author-journalist Nancy E. Lynch and Vietnam veteran Rick Lovekin join forces for a compelling multi-media presentation on the contentious conflict and Nancy’s award-winning book, Vietnam Mailbag, Voices From the War: 1968-1972.
Her 456-page book is a social history based on nearly 1,000 war letters and hundreds of pictures Nancy received from Delaware servicemen for her popular News Journal column, Nancy’s Vietnam Mailbag.
Rick, a Huey helicopter door gunner and Cobra crew chief during the war, will share some of his combat experiences and narrate a dramatic slide presentation set to 1960s music. Autographed books, at $45 each, DVDs, bookmarks and postcards will be available for purchase after the program. Lecture will be followed by a reception.

Delaware Roots Film Series Estamos Aquí
Held at the Historic Milton Theatre in partnership with the Rehoboth Beach Film Society.Estamos Aquí reveals the humanity behind the headlines of one of the most important issues facing the United States in its history. The story of one community in a changing nation, this poignant documentary film explores the evolving social, political and economic landscape of Georgetown, Delaware. This small, traditionally white community is home to the largest poultry-producing county in the nation, and is in need of a growing labor force.

2010 Spring/Summer
Magnificent & Modest Walking Tour of Milton
Join Milton Historical Society staff and volunteers for a walking tour of the town once known as, “Head of Broadkill.” Milton enjoys a rich architectural heritage, with 198 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tour will review the town’s early history and include a lively discussion the ship captains and seafaring men who called Milton home. A broad range of architectural styles will be featured including: Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Bungalow. Attention will also be given to the regional folk or vernacular tradition of building found throughout the town. Button sheds, barns, and outbuildings will be discussed as the tour winds through side lanes and alleys.
The tour will last approximately 1 ½ hours and covers a little over a mile. Sturdy shoes, plenty of sun block, and hats are recommended. Weather permitting.
